從寫完《第九交響曲》後直到逝世，弦樂四重奏幾乎是晚期的貝多芬表達情感的唯一音樂寫作形式。貝多芬在逝世前三年裡所寫下的最後6首弦樂四重奏在當時完全不被人理解，後來被公認為貝多芬藝術與思想境界，步入超凡化境的最高成就。
今天，我們就先來認識下貝多芬3首 晚期弦樂四重奏
1、降E大調第12弦樂四重奏
String Quartet No.12 in E-Flat Major, Op.127
貝多芬最後的6部弦樂四重奏包含了貝多芬最強有力的音樂情感。音樂意境非常濃密且十分個人化，貝多芬幾乎打破了所有當時和聲與形式的慣例。它們不僅是貝多芬自己，也是弦樂四重奏創作歷史上的最高成就之一。
“第12四重奏”是這批傑作的開端。關於它不同凡響的終曲樂章，傅雷曾這樣描述：好似一株樹上開滿著不同的花，各有各的姿態。在那些吟誦體內，時而清明、時而絕望——清明時不失激昂的情調，痛苦時並無疲倦的氣色。
2、降B大調第13弦樂四重奏
String Quartet No.13 in B-Flat Major, Op.130
這是題獻給加利欽公爵的三部“加利欽四重奏”中的第二首。實際上這部編號130的作品是在貝多芬已經開始創作第三首“加利欽四重奏”《a小調第15弦樂四重奏》（作品132）之後才動筆的。兩者同時寫作，後按出版順序作品130被編為“第13號”。
“第13四重奏”是在貝多芬晚年不幸生活中最具幽默性的一首作品，其樂思的流露極其自然，並帶有幻想的陶醉。在貝多芬的談話筆記中，曾稱這首樂曲為“親愛的四重奏”。
這部四重奏共6個樂章，最初的末樂章因過於龐大和艱難而後來直接成為了一首獨立的作品，即著名的《大賦格》（作品133）。貝多芬另配了一個相對簡短卻也具有相當規模的快板末樂章，而這個樂章是在他作完“第16四重奏”後才寫的，是他所有弦樂四重奏創作裡最後完成的一個樂章。
3、升c小調第14弦樂四重奏
String Quartet No.14 in C-Sharp Minor, Op.131
在所有晚期弦樂四重奏當中，貝多芬本人最喜歡的就是“第14四重奏”，並將其稱為“最完美的曲子”。有部分評論家也認為這是貝多芬最出色的一首四重奏。
這首四重奏多達7個樂章，且要連起來不間斷地進行演奏。從平靜而神秘的開頭，到鋒芒四溢的險峻的結尾，彷彿攀登一座巍峨的高山。
據說，舒伯特在臨終前最後的願望，就是請一支四重奏樂隊在他的床前，不斷地演奏貝多芬的這首作品。瓦格納則稱這部作品的首樂章表達了自己“所知道的最悲傷的情感”。
